Variation in predator diet and prey size affects perceived impacts to salmon species of high conservation concern

چکیده

Management of protected species is difficult when objectives include the recovery both predator and its prey. Ideally, identifying trade-offs between competing involves evaluating management alternatives with a quantitative model that integrates information on species, but data are often limited. We used new diet simulation modeling to update our understanding seal predation juvenile Chinook (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) coho salmon kisutch) in Puget Sound. Under prey size assumptions by previous studies, estimates suggest could be significant source mortality for (mean: 37% ocean age-0 juveniles), varied considerably among years (range median estimates: 22%–49%). However, we estimated from otoliths recovered scats, impact (numbers fish consumed) decreased 71%. Predation was relatively low under scenarios (6%–8% juveniles) 21% decrease consumption using otolith-derived size. Our analysis highlights importance updating inputs re-evaluating multi-species models ecosystem-based fisheries management.

Size and scaling of predator-prey dynamics.

We propose a scaled version of the Rosenzweig-MacArthur model using both Type I and Type II functional responses that incorporates the size dependence of interaction rates. Our aim is to link the energetic needs of organisms with the dynamics of interacting populations, for which survival is a result of a game-theoretic struggle for existence. We solve the scaled model of predator-prey dynamics...

Does Intraspecific Size Variation in a Predator Affect Its Diet Diversity and Top-Down Control of Prey?

It has long been known that intraspecific variation impacts evolutionary processes, but only recently have its potential ecological effects received much attention. Theoretical models predict that genetic or phenotypic variance within species can alter interspecific interactions, and experiments have shown that genotypic diversity in clonal species can impact a wide range of ecological processe...

Prey or predator? Body size of an approaching animal affects decisions to attack or escape

An animal must assess an approaching heterospecific to determine whether it is prey or predator. Because prey tend to be smaller than their predators, foraging responses decrease and escape responses are predicted to increase over a range of approacher size. Sufficiently, small approachers may be readily identified as prey and large ones as predators. However, more time and closer approach may ...

Individual variation in prey choice in a predator-prey community.

One predator-two prey community models are studied with an emphasis on individual variation in predator behavior. The predator behaves according to a well-known prey choice model. The behavioral model predicts that predators should always attack the primary prey (more profitable prey of the two), but only attack the alternative prey (less profitable prey of the two) when the density of the prim...

Impacts of maximum sustainable yield policy to prey–predator systems

This article investigates the effects of reaching the maximum sustainable yield (MSY) in prey–predator systems where the prey population follows logistic law of growth. Two different models are proposed: (i) first model involves linear prey–predator interaction and intraspecific competition among predator populations, and (ii) the second one is a ratio-dependent prey–predator system. In the fir...
